backpost 2: tam tam
sunday
inga and i dragged ourselves out of bed at about 2pm to go to tam tam which is held at the base of mount royal. i'll go into more detail but basically tam tam is a lot of people gathering and banging on drums.
we caught a bus to the top of the mountain and then climbed down as the view is absolutely amazing from the top. you can see all of the city and the water surrounding it as well. as you climb down you are completely surround by the red/yellow/orange/green trees i keep harping on about but your on a distinct pathway so its a really nice walk and we could hear the drums from tam tam already, it sounded like we were about to stumble across people sacrificing a goat or something. as we got the the base of the mountain we could smell the burning weed... you could almost get high just breathing in that place.
after you break through the trees we saw a group of about 30 people playing a medieval game they usually play in the forest. basically they re-enact a battle from medieval times and they dress up and make swords and axes and everything. we kept walking there was a huge statue in the middle of this park with about 20 people playing - i call them drums cos i dont know the proper name but it looks like a single bongo only the body of it is a lot longer -, people also play tamberines, triangles, whistles and there was even a saxaphone. there were about another 50 people standing around dancing or just watching. the people dancing look like they are part of a sponsored epileptic fit but it was amazing to be there (and you kinda wanna join in). tam tam happens every sunday but it isnt an actual organised event. the locals just turn up whenever on sunday and finish playing when its too cold or they get bored or something. apparently in the summer the park is covered with hundreds of people all there for tam tam.
